Through the awards, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) recognize innovative individuals, programs, institutions, and organizations advancing health in the Americas, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean. The awards highlight key aspects of public health as a way to stimulate the growth of the next and rising generation of leaders working together to improve health and health care in the Americas.

PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne was in Barbados the week of April 8–12, 2013, it was her first official visit to the country. She meet with high-level officials including Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, Minister of Health John David Boyce, Governor General Elliot Belgrave, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Maxine McClean.

She also meet with Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley and British High Commissioner Paul Brummell.

The meetings focussed on issues including major health challenges facing Barbados and other Eastern Caribbean countries and ways PAHO/WHO’s technical cooperation can help address them.

March 25, 2013 - The Offices of the Pan American Health Organization in Barbados hosted newly elected Minister of Health of Barbados, the Honourable John D. Boyce to a one day Orientation Session.
