Health System Profile of Haiti |
|
The health system in Haiti is divided into four subsectors: public, private nonprofit, mixed, and private for-profit. The public sector has been strongly diminished by the political crisis since 1991. Around 36% of the health facilities belong to the public sector. Within this sub-sector, the majority of the institutions function with extreme autonomy, without state control, and without a vision of a services network. A patient referral system has been designed between institutions, but it is not functional. The Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) is the principal public institution in the health sector. It has a central level, a departmental level, and a local level.
