Health System Profile of Mexico

MexicoThe health services system of Mexico is divided into three large groups, in accordance with employment status and the ability to pay, and among these access to care is fragmented in several institutions. The SSA is the regulatory institution of the system and prepares the Mexican Official Standards where the procedures and specific contents of the national sanitary regulation are established.

A national information system does not exist, but a set of subsystems structurally and functionally disconnected among them, generates information on population and coverage, resources, services delivery and health hazards. The sanitary regulation of products, goods, and services is performed within a State framework of shared responsibilities between the federation and the secretariats of health.

Health System Profile of Mexico

The second edition of this profile was prepared in a collaborative effort involving more than 12 professionals and staff members from the Secretariat of Health of Mexico and the PAHO/WHO Representative Office in that country. The PAHO/WHO Representative Office was responsible for coordinating the process. The external review was conducted by public health experts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Mexican Social Security Institute. Final review, edition, and translation are the responsibility of the Health Systems and Policies Unit, PAHO/WHO, Washington, DC.
